§ IStrategic position

Between two load belts.

Roughly equidistant from the major South Asian load centres (Mumbai, Chennai, Karachi) and the East African gateways (Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, Durban). Direct sailings on the two main carrier alliances; air links to Europe, the Gulf, India, China, and Southern Africa.

The political position is neutral. The legal system runs on English common law. English and French are working languages across trade, customs, and banking. The trading day overlaps both Asian and European business hours.

§ IIFreeport regime

Bonded by design.

The Mauritius Freeport allows duty-free storage and processing of goods intended for re-export. Light value-add operations are permitted inside the zone: relabelling, repacking, kitting, and light assembly. Goods released into the Mauritian domestic market pay duty and VAT on release; goods leaving the zone for re-export pay nothing.

We advise on whether and how to use the zone: bonded storage, re-export documentation, value-add inside the zone, and onward distribution into Africa and the Indian Ocean islands. The aim is to keep the Freeport conversation specific to your trade rather than theoretical.

§ IIITrade agreements

Seven preferential regimes in play.

Eligibility decided at HS-line level. Consulting frequently surfaces the regime that should be claimed.

Preferential tariff treatment among member states across Eastern and Southern Africa.

03

SADC

Southern African Development Community

Preferential tariff lines in force since 2021. Highly relevant for inbound textile, apparel, machinery, and chemicals.

05

China FTA

Mauritius – China Free Trade Agreement

Preferential tariff treatment in both directions, in force since 2021. The first FTA between China and an African state.

06

EU iEPA

Preferential treatment for Mauritian exports into the EU and select EU imports.

07

UAE CEPA

Mauritius – UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement

The most recent preferential agreement entering force, relevant for the Gulf corridor.

§ IVCarrier connectivity

Sea and air.

Direct calls on both major alliances. Air via the Gulf and Europe.

Sea

Port Louis on the alliance maps.

Direct calls from major South Asian ports (Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai), Chinese ports (Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Yantian, Qingdao), Middle Eastern ports (Jebel Ali), and Southern African ports (Durban, Cape Town). Transhipment options through Colombo, Singapore, and Salalah for indirect routings.

Air

SSR for belly and freighter.

SSR International Airport handles passenger-belly and freighter capacity to Europe (Paris, Frankfurt), the Gulf (Dubai), India (Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai), China (via the Gulf or direct seasonal), and Southern Africa (Johannesburg, Nairobi). Co-load options on the network for low-volume air consignments.
